A Kind of Homecoming
Grand Duchy of Morov
The Grand Duchy of Morov is ruled from the royal capital of Helgabal, and has been since the end of Zhengyi’s rule of Damara. It was then that Baron Dimian Ree, a descendant of Feldrin Bloodfeathers moved the baronial seat to the royal capital in a bid to make himself king of Damara. When Ree’s bid for the throne failed, the baronial seat returned to Morovar for a time during the Dragonsbane dynasty. But when the usurper Yarin Frostmantle took the throne of Damara, he elevated the Barony of Morov to a Grand Duchy and appropriated it for himself. King Frostmantle has linked the title of Grand Duke of Morov with the royal crown and so now the duchy is administered by the king directly.
Together, the Grand Duchy of Morov and the Barony of Olsten account for about one third of the entire population of Damara. With the city of Helgabal, that percentage becomes even greater. It is a land of rolling hills and fertile farmland along the Goliad river valley. Fruits orchards and vineyards blanket the Goliad’s banks while field of wheat and other grains cover the hills of central Morov. The two main cities of Morov are Morovar, the former baronial seat, and Helgabal. Morovar is a fortified town sitting on a promontory above the Goliad River while Helgabal itself is the royal capital.
Agriculture is the most important part of the Grand Duchy’s economy. Morovar serves as the central hub for local growers and the majority of their goods are send down the Goliad River to the merchants of Helgabal. From there it moves south down Lake Mogador to the markets of Impiltur and the Sea of Fallen Stars. The Goliad River also serves as a major commerical highway for trade goods coming downriver from the Barony of Brandiar and the Galena Mountains. Of particular value to the merchants of Morovar is the Bloodstone trade, and many prominent merchant houes of Helgabal maintain buyers’ offices in the fortified city.
The current Grand Duke of Morov is King Yarin Frostmantle, though he seems to take little interest in the day to day runnings of his duchy. The province is administered from Morovar by Count Beldrin Lisselhorn, who sees that the trade in bloodstones and agricultural products continues to flow freely from the countryside and down the river to Helgabal.
